A performance task is a planned activity that is given to students to perform to let them demonstrate their knowledge or ability to conduct the subject. Overall these performance tasks allows the teacher to observe a student on their own. At first I had a difficult time coming up with a performance task, but we were given the opportunity to hear more examples. An example of a performance task is for a student to demonstrate the ability to find the equation for a parabola given only a few of the coordinate points.

Formative vs Performance Tasks
This week during class we discussed Understanding by Design (UbD). We discussed its framework, the seven key tenets and the three stages of UbD. Towards the end of class we went into greater detail about Formative assessments and Performance Task. Formative assessments are a way for teachers to modify their teaching and learning activities to help make sue students are learning the intended material. An example of a formative assessment would be an exit ticket given to students at the end of class over the material that was just lectured on.

My daughter came home this weekend and we discussed the difference between this sort of end of unit testing and the way it was done when I was a kid. Which was way back when we had a piece of paper and took a test. Ancient near prehistoric I know. I related to her that their was a lot of it that I did not remember of those test. She agreed that the test that she has taken of the years that were blue book or fill in the blank she kept for a little while but eventually she has forgotten. We both agreed that we have retained far more of what we learned through our the different performance task (test) we have taken.

Your examples are really good. I had a hard time at first grasping the difference, but once we went into greater detail I finally got it. I feel that the students will remember the performance tasks better than the formative because they can be more hands on with it. The formative is more knowledge based in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteYou did a great job with your explanation!
